A car accident is disorienting, but the actions you take in the first few minutes matter enormously for your safety and your legal rights.

First, stay calm and check yourself and your passengers for injuries. Call 911 immediately — even for minor accidents. A police report creates an official record essential when filing an insurance claim.

While waiting for help, move your vehicle to a safe spot if possible and avoid admitting fault to anyone at the scene. Exchange insurance and contact information with the other driver.

Document everything: photograph the damage, road conditions, any visible injuries, and the surrounding area.

Seek medical attention even if you feel fine. Adrenaline can mask pain, and whiplash or internal injuries may not surface until hours or days later.

Finally, notify your insurance company promptly, but speak with an attorney before giving a recorded statement to the other party's insurer.
